Salvia amplexicaulis
Height x Spread: 70cm x 50cm
Although close in form and habit to Salvia nemerosa, by contrast S. amplexicaulis produces taller spikes with larger individual violet blue flowers arranged in rings along the strongly branching purple stems. Like many other forms of sage, its fresh green foliage is rough to the touch and aromatic.
Ideal for adding drama and vertical punctuation to a summer border, its intense jewel-like colour really draws the eye and combines well with lime greens, oranges and deep pinks. Creating a wildlife garden? This is a good choice as bees and other pollinators love it. Cuts well for arrangements too. Hardy, it prefers a sunny or lightly shaded spot in a free draining soil with some moisture.
