Hydrangea paniculata Early Harry ('Hpopr018'PBR)
Once considered 'very unfashionable', the much deserved popularity of Hydrangea continues to grow year on year with more new cultivars registered each year. 'Early Harry' is a recent introduction from Belgium that stands out from the crowd for its looks and flowering season. As early as May its creamy white buds emerge before opening in June to form a pyramidal cluster of large flamboyant sterile flowers that encircle a centre packed with smaller fertile flowers. These contrast deliciously with its reddish-pink stems and glossy green leaves.
As the summer progresses the flowers take on a pinkish blush with autumn delivering strong red and deep orange tints to the foliage. Perfect for smaller gardens where every plant has to earn its place in terms of value and interest, make room for it in your woodland garden or mixed border too as it will light up shadier areas. It thrives in part shade in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil but can tolerate more sun if the ground is sufficiently moist.
This plant is toxic if ingested.
