Gardening Jargon Explained: A Beginner's Guide to Soil, pH and More

Like any new study area, hobby or craft, gardening uses its own language. What is meant by reasonable soil? What is a free-draining soil? How can you tell if your soil is alkaline, neutral or acidic? We try to demystify some of the terms used in the hope that you'll feel more confident when you're just starting out.

What Do We Mean by "Reasonable Soil"?

When a plant label or growing guide says a plant prefers "reasonable soil", it simply means soil that isn't at either extreme — not waterlogged and boggy, but not bone-dry sand either. A reasonable soil holds some moisture, has a bit of structure, and contains enough organic matter to support healthy root growth. Most garden soils, with a little care and the addition of garden compost, will qualify.

Organic matter is any material that comes from living or once-living organisms — think fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen vegetable peelings, or well-rotted manure. As it breaks down in the soil, it releases nutrients that plants can absorb, improves the soil's ability to hold moisture, and helps bind soil particles together into a crumbly, workable structure. Garden compost is one of the most accessible and effective sources of organic matter you can add to your soil.

Farmyard manure — well-rotted dung from cattle, horses, or other livestock — is another excellent way to boost organic matter levels. It adds nutrients, improves soil structure, and encourages beneficial soil organisms. Always use well-rotted manure rather than fresh, as fresh manure can scorch plant roots and may introduce weed seeds.

What Is Free-Draining Soil?

Free-draining soil is exactly what it sounds like — soil that allows water to pass through it relatively quickly rather than sitting and pooling. Sandy soils are naturally free-draining, as are soils on chalk or gravel. Many Mediterranean plants, alpines, and drought-tolerant perennials thrive in these conditions because their roots dislike sitting in prolonged moisture.

If your soil is heavy clay and you want to improve drainage, you can work in horticultural grit or coarse sand, along with plenty of organic matter such as garden compost or well-rotted manure. Raised beds are another excellent solution for plants that demand sharp drainage.

What Is Moisture-Retentive Soil?

Moisture-retentive soil is the opposite of free-draining — it holds water for longer, keeping the root zone consistently damp. Soils rich in organic matter are naturally moisture retentive. Clay soils are also moisture-retentive but in summer clay soils often bake solid. Many woodland plants, bog garden plants, and moisture-loving perennials such as Astilbes, Hostas, and Ligularias thrive in these conditions.

While moisture-retentive soil is a real asset in dry summers, it can become waterlogged in winter if drainage is poor. You can improve moisture retention in light, sandy soils by incorporating plenty of well-rotted compost or leaf mould, which acts like a sponge and helps the soil hold water between rainfalls.

What Is Soil pH — and Why Does It Matter?

Soil pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline your soil is, expressed on a scale from 1 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. Below 7 is acidic; above 7 is alkaline. Most garden plants are happiest somewhere between pH 6 and 7.5, but some have strong preferences:

  • Acid-loving plants (also called ericaceous plants) include rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, and blueberries. They need a pH below 6 to absorb nutrients properly.
  • Alkaline-tolerant plants include many Mediterranean herbs, clematis, and lilac, which cope well on chalky or limestone soils.

How to Establish Your Soil pH

Nature gives you plenty of clues. The plants growing well in neighbouring gardens and local wild spaces can tell you a great deal about your soil — often without any testing at all. For greater certainty, a simple soil pH test kit will give you a clear answer. You have a few options:

  • Soil test kits — available from most garden centres, these use a simple colour-change reaction to indicate your pH level. Take samples from several spots in your garden for a more accurate picture.
  • Electronic pH meters — push the probe into moist soil for a quick digital reading. Useful for regular monitoring.
  • Professional soil analysis — for a more detailed picture, including nutrient levels, you can send a soil sample to a laboratory. Although be aware this will be significantly more expensive than a soil test kit.

How to Adjust Your Soil pH

If your soil in your garden isn't quite right for what you want to grow, you can adjust it — though it takes time and patience:

  • To lower pH (make more acidic): Work in sulphur chips, ericaceous compost, or acidic mulches such as pine bark. This is a gradual process.
  • To raise pH (make more alkaline): Apply garden lime (calcium carbonate) or dolomitic lime. Always follow the recommended rates on the packaging and retest after a few months.

Alternatively grow plants in containers or pots where it is easier to establish the right pH balance.

Other Useful Soil Terms

While we're at it, here are a few more terms you'll often encounter:

  • Loam — the gardener's ideal: a balanced mix of sand, silt, and clay that drains well but retains enough moisture and nutrients. If you have loamy soil, you're very lucky.
  • Humus — the dark, spongy material that forms when organic matter fully breaks down. It improves soil structure, water retention, and fertility.
  • Mulch — a layer of material (compost, bark, straw, gravel) spread over the soil surface to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature.
  • Tilth — the physical condition of the top of the soil.  You usually achieve this with the use of a rake.  Good tilth means the soil is crumbly, well-structured, and easy to work — ideal for sowing seeds.
  • Friable — used to describe soil that crumbles easily and is light to handle. Friable soil is a sign of good structure and healthy organic matter content, making it easy to dig, sow into, and plant. It is the opposite of compacted or cloddy soil.

Don't Be Discouraged

Every experienced gardener was once a beginner puzzling over the same terms. The good news is that most plants are more forgiving than the labels suggest, and soil can almost always be improved over time. Start by looking at plants which are growing well in your locality or start with a simple pH test, get to know your soil type, and build from there. Gardening is a journey — and understanding your soil is one of the most rewarding first steps you can take.
