Purplish-blue, nectar-rich flowers adorn the dark upright stems of ‘Rugen’ from May into July — a naturalistic and refined salvia that draws the eye and pollinators in equal measure. Regular deadheading of faded flower spikes extends the display. Combines beautifully with Verbascum, Allium ‘Millennium’ and Campanula glomerata, as well as ornamental grasses such as Stipa tenuissima.
Originally grown for an RHS show garden, it has since become a firm favourite at Hardy’s. Thrives in a sunny position in light, fairly fertile, moist but free-draining soil; tolerates light partial shade.
