Alstroemeria psittacina 'Royal Star' shares the striking dark red flowers of the species — tipped green and streaked with dark purple — but pairs them with handsome variegated foliage: bright green leaves thinly edged in white, which form good clumps for several weeks before the flowers appear, usefully extending the plant's season of interest.
Effective as a statement plant in a container or threaded through a mixed border. The variegated foliage benefits from some shade, which prevents the white margins from scorching; a soil with good organic content gives the best results.
