Epimedium ‘Amber Queen’ has become deservedly popular for its prolific display of delicate spurred flowers in spring — each pale yellow flushed with amber, somewhat reminiscent of a jester’s hat. Its neat, heart-shaped foliage is equally appealing: emerging fresh green suffused with red before maturing to darker green.
Happiest in moist, humus-rich soil with good drainage in light dappled shade, it will also tolerate slightly drier conditions, making it an excellent choice for underplanting trees and shrubs. Tough and hardy if sheltered from cold, drying winds, it bulks up steadily, suppressing weeds as it spreads.
