Pheasant’s Tail Grass — one of the most evocative common names in the garden — is a beautiful ornamental grass that earns its keep across every season. As the arching foliage matures in late summer, deep reddish-orange hues develop, enhanced by rusty red, feathery flower heads that catch the light beautifully.
It thrives in a sunny border with free-draining, moderately fertile soil, and will also tolerate partial shade and heavier soils. Hardy to around -10°C, it is a reliable choice for UK gardens. It contrasts beautifully with perennials such as Achillea and Verbena rigida. To keep it tidy and prevent prolific self-seeding, remove the flower stems above the foliage in late autumn.
