This form of Chinese fountain grass bears particularly attractive bottlebrush-like flowerheads in late summer, opening dark red before fading to smoky purple and then buff, above arching narrow green foliage.
Adaptable and dramatic in form, it suits prairie, gravel and coastal plantings alike, tolerating salt-laden air with ease. Beautiful through summer and autumn, its upright habit provides valuable winter structure and a food source for birds — especially striking on a frosty morning. Do not cut back until the risk of frost has passed, as the stems provide essential protection; then cut close to the ground.
