Pollinator Friendly

Statuesque and elegant, ‘Queen of Sheba’ stands out among bugbane cultivars for its unusual autumn display. Its sweetly scented, white bottlebrush blooms are finer and more delicate than most, gently arching like fingers away from dark stems that rise from lush, deeply divided, near-black foliage.

Frame its unusual silhouette in a lightly shaded border or woodland garden, with an underplanting of ferns, Hosta and Epimedium to highlight the striking foliage contrast whilst the flowers shine out of the gloom. Plant in moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade, where pollinators will seek out its nectar-rich flowers.

Plant Notes

  • Care Guide:

    Grow in cool, dappled shade in moist, reasonably fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Mulch to maintain soil moisture and condition. Cut back to around 5cm once the foliage dies back in autumn. Actaea is long-lived and can be left undisturbed — it does not need regular division. It dislikes hot, dry conditions.

    Wildlife-friendly — nectar-rich flowers attract bumblebees and other pollinators in autumn.
