Commonly known as Marsh Mallow, Althaea officinalis is a native herbaceous perennial bearing small, dish-shaped, pale lilac-pink flowers on tall stems above hairy, grey-green foliage. Blooming from mid-summer through to autumn, it is a good choice for wildlife and informal cottage gardens, attracting bees and butterflies in their droves. With its tendency to self-seed, it may gently travel around the garden over the years.
Tolerant of most soils, Marsh Mallow flourishes in fertile, good soil in full sun, but will also tolerate partial shade.
