Kniphofia ‘Tawny King’ is a tall, statuesque red hot poker producing elegant flower spikes with a striking two-tone effect — creamy yellow flowers opening upwards from deep tawny orange buds to create a warm ombré from base to tip. It flowers from late July into October, bringing bold colour to the border at a time when many earlier perennials are fading.
The evergreen, strap-like foliage provides year-round structure and makes a useful backdrop for spring planting. It suits a wide range of garden styles — from cottage to coastal — and associates particularly well with taller ornamental grasses such as Molinia and Calamagrostis. It thrives in full sun in deep, moist but free-draining soil.
