    Pollinator Friendly RHS Award of Garden Merit

    Bistorta ‘Pink Elephant’ produces long, slender spikes of rosy-pink flowers that arch and bend like a wavy trunk, rising above distinctive dagger-like, dark green semi-evergreen foliage from midsummer into autumn. A compact, vigorous perennial, it is a smaller form of Bistorta with considerable presence in the border.

    Vigorous without being invasive, it suits the front of a border, smaller gardens, or containers in a lightly shaded spot. It thrives in moist soil in sun or partial shade but will cope with slightly drier conditions once established. Particularly effective planted in large groups, it combines well with ornamental grasses such as Molinia or purple-leaved Actaea, and its flowers are highly attractive to bees.

    Plant Notes

    • Care Guide:

      Plant in moist, fertile soil enriched with organic matter, in full sun or partial shade. Tolerates heavier soils well and is reliably hardy. Mulching annually will help maintain soil fertility and moisture retention. Once established, spreads steadily to form effective weed-suppressing ground cover. Cut back after flowering or in late winter or spring before new growth begins. Divide clumps in autumn or spring to control spread and keep plants vigorous or to propagate.
