Arching stems bear pea-like blooms with rich maroon standards and a lilac keel in spring, above a neat mound of rounded, pinnate foliage. One of the earliest perennials to flower, Lathyrus vernus is a reliable and undemanding plant that quietly gets on with the job year after year.
It thrives in moist but free-draining soil in sun or partial shade — well suited to the front of a border, open woodland gardens, or under-planting shrubs. It can be divided in early spring to increase your stock.
Please note: all parts of this plant are toxic.
