Symphyotrichum novi-belgii 'Jessica Jones' stands out among autumn-flowering asters for its large, delicate flowers. From deep rosy-pink buds open single lavender-pink flowers with fine petals and a golden-yellow centre — and as each flower is pollinated, the centre turns red, signalling to pollinators to move on, before the petals fade to a soft, frilly pink.
A recent mildew-resistant introduction, it is versatile and adaptable, suiting cottage gardens, prairie plantings, and more formal herbaceous borders alike. Its subtle colouring is beautifully enhanced by soft autumn light, and the stems are worth leaving standing through winter — particularly striking on a frost-edged morning. It thrives in a sunny spot in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

Care Guide:
Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour — any time after flowering but spring is preferred. Cut back stems after flowering in autumn. Taller selections may require staking. Symphyotrichum novi-belgii cultivars benefit from good air circulation to help prevent mildew.
