Symphyotrichum laeve ‘Calliope’ is a tall, airy Michaelmas Daisy, its dark branching stems and fine leaves forming a semi-transparent structure smothered in small pale lilac-purple flowers in autumn. Each golden-yellow centre turns red once pollinated, signalling to bees and butterflies that it is time to move on.
Its see-through habit makes it a valuable plant for adding depth and colour in a cottage garden border, and it is particularly striking against a dark backdrop of evergreen shrubs or a hornbeam hedge. It also combines well with tall ornamental grasses for a naturalistic prairie effect. Notably tolerant of coastal conditions, it performs well in exposed seaside gardens. It thrives in sun or part shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
