Architectural and very striking, Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii is widely admired for its bold clumps of brush-like stems with narrow, glaucous foliage and chunky clusters of lime-green bracts that appear in spring.
Being evergreen, it is a great choice for providing strong year-round structure, even in winter, before rewarding with vibrant colour that really sings out in spring. Hailing from the Mediterranean, it prefers a very sunny spot in light, free-draining soil and suits a gravel garden as well as more formal situations. Easy to grow and low maintenance — wear gloves to prune flowered stems down to ground level in September.
