Silene coronaria Gardeners’ World (‘Blych’) (d) produces double magenta flowers on tall, branching stems throughout summer, held above a clump of softly hairy, silver-grey semi-evergreen foliage. A sterile selection, it does not set seed, which means it flowers for considerably longer than the straight species — an advantage that makes it one of the most reliable and floriferous forms available.
Gardeners’ World was famously discovered by Geoff Hamilton whilst filming for the television programme. Silver-leaved and drought-adapted, it thrives in full sun in well-drained soil. Deadhead regularly to prolong the display, and enjoy the bold splash of magenta it brings to sunny borders and gravel gardens.
