Silene uniflora — Sea Campion — is a low-growing, semi-evergreen British native, producing delicate white tubular flowers with distinctive balloon-like calyces over cushions of waxy, pale green foliage in early to midsummer.
This ankle-high gem is perfect for growing in wall crevices or alpine troughs, where its flowers and foliage tumble gently downwards. It is equally at home in a coastal or gravel garden. In the wild it colonises dunes, shingle, and clifftops, and in common with many cliff-dwelling plants it can tolerate high nutrient levels — thriving in free-draining soil with some moisture, in full sun or light shade. Bees love it too.
