Polystichum munitum
Height x Spread: 120cm x 120cm
Native to the western states of the USA, this large evergreen fern has narrow, leathery, lance-shaped, pinnate, glossy, dark green fronds and an upright growth habit. It is hardy to -15°C.
Best when planted in moist, fertile, neutral to acidic soil in shade or partial shade. Old or damaged fronds can be removed at the base.
As the plant matures it takes on the familiar shuttlecock shape which lends itself to woodland or cottage style plantings. It also makes a great addition to jungle or tropical style gardens and works well with Brunnera, Hosta and other large leaved plants .
Ensure it is placed in moisture retentive soil but be careful never to let it get waterlogged or prone to excessive winter wet.
Can also be grown in very large terracotta pots to make a statement in a shady area of the garden.
