Commonly known as Rusty Foxglove, Digitalis ferruginea produces erect spikes of tubular golden-brown flowers with rusty-red internal veins, above a basal clump of thin, narrow green leaves.

Naturally found in woods, clearings and scrub in the northern Mediterranean, it is a great plant for a shaded or part-shaded border and a definite must for a woodland garden. Its tall flower spikes contrast brilliantly with ferns and hostas and are absolute bee magnets. It also has some resistance to deer and rabbits.

This short-lived perennial prefers humus-rich soil in shade but can tolerate most soils except very dry or very wet, and will even cope in a sunny spot.

Caution: all parts are poisonous.
