Hylotelephium telephium (Atropurpureum Group) 'Karfunkelstein'
Height x Spread: 30cm x 40cm
Dense clusters of dark pinky-red starry flowers are carried on top of strong wine red stems with succulent greenish-purple leaves. Similar in appearance to 'Purple Emperor', but we think stronger and more vigorous, this is an excellent Hylotelephium for the front of a border. In spring rosettes of smoky pale purple green leaves emerge, which contrast beautifully with purple tulips.
The foliage then darkens as the plant clumps up, providing interesting and striking contrasts with surrounding plants, before the dark pink buds and then star-like flowers emerge in late summer lasting into autumn. A Chelsea Chop, i.e. cutting back one third of the stems by half in late May, will help prolong flowering further. This good, all-round performer thrives in any any reasonable soil in the full sun.
