Symphyotrichum turbinellum

Gently arching sprays of smallish lavender-blue daisies with yellow centres, dance on almost black, upright and slightly branching stems, with narrow, dark green foliage. Commonly known as the 'Prairie Aster', this elegant perennial is perfect for adding a light layer of colour at the back of a border.  

Its almost luminous flowers look particularly good against dark backgrounds such as a hornbeam hedge, helping other colours to stand out.  Capitalise on its origins and delicate, natural form by combining it with tall, ornamental grasses and other daisies to create a naturalistic scheme.  A veritable bee and butterfly magnet, it cuts well for arrangements and is mildew resistant. It performs best in a free draining soil that is reasonably fertile, in full sun.
