Ageratina — Snakeroot — is a large genus of shrubs and herbaceous perennials in the daisy family, native to the Americas from Mexico to Costa Rica and beyond. Bushy in habit, they produce opposite leaves and clusters of small, fluffy tubular flowers in corymbs — modest individually but collectively creating a soft, airy effect in the late-season border.
Best grown in well-drained soil in full sun or light shade, with shelter from cold, drying winds. A dry mulch over the roots in winter provides useful protection. Propagate from softwood cuttings in spring.
A good choice for cottage gardens, informal borders, and courtyard plantings. Combines well with Symphyotrichum, Bistorta, Actaea, and Anemone × hybrida.
