Ajuga — Bugle — is a low-growing, evergreen or semi-evergreen perennial native to Europe, Turkey, Asia and Africa, found in dry open scrub, grassland and woodland. Erect spikes of small blue flowers — with pink and white forms also available — appear in spring, rising above dense mats of foliage and providing an early-season nectar source for pollinators. The oval leaves are the main event for much of the year, ranging from rich green to deep purple and variegated forms, offering year-round ground-level colour.
Ajuga spreads by creeping stems and grows well in sun or shade in moist, humus-rich soil, though it tolerates dry conditions and performs particularly well on heavy clay soils. A reliable, low-maintenance ground cover that can spread vigorously — lift and divide congested patches in autumn to keep it in check.
Ideal for woodland edges, shaded borders and underplanting in cottage gardens. Combines well with Pulmonaria, Brunnera, Geranium and Tiarella for a tapestry of contrasting foliage and spring colour.
