Bistorta — Bistort or Knotweed — is a long-lived, rhizomatous perennial native to Europe and Asia, formerly classified as Persicaria and still widely sold under that name. Slender, tapering spikes of small pink or white flowers are held on erect stems over a long season, and are highly attractive to pollinators.

Adaptable and easy to grow, Bistorta thrives in any moist, fertile soil enriched with organic matter, in full sun or partial shade. Tolerant of heavier soils and reliably hardy, it spreads steadily to form weed-suppressing ground cover and is easy to control.

Well suited to cottage gardens, waterside plantings, and the wilder edges of a border. Combines beautifully with Geranium, Astrantia, other Bistorta, and moisture-loving Iris.
