Boltonia — False Aster — is a tall, clump-forming herbaceous perennial native to North America. Clouds of small, daisy-like flowers in white to pale pink with yellow centres are borne on branching stems above blue-green foliage in late summer and autumn, providing valuable colour and nectar at the end of the season.
Boltonia thrives in full sun in moisture-retentive soil, and is well suited to waterside habitats and damp meadows. On exposed sites, stake plants or grow them amongst neighbours that can offer support. The Chelsea chop — cutting plants back by one third in May — helps prevent excessive height and keeps plants more compact.
A natural choice for prairie and naturalistic planting schemes, or the back of a sunny border. Combines well with Aster, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, and late-flowering Persicaria.
