Echinacea — Coneflower — is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial native to the prairies and open woodlands of North America. Bold daisy flowers with gently reflexed petals surround distinctive raised central cones in shades of rich purple, pink, white, and warm orange-red, flowering from midsummer well into autumn. As the petals fade, the architectural seed heads persist through winter — handsome in frost and a valuable food source for birds.

Outstanding plants for pollinators, with nectar-rich flowers that attract bees and butterflies over a long season. Long-lived and reliable in the right conditions; established clumps improve with age.

Thrives in well-drained to moderately fertile soil in full sun; tolerates drought once established and performs well on lighter, sandier soils. Dislikes waterlogged or heavy clay conditions, particularly in winter.

At home in prairie-style and naturalistic plantings, cottage garden borders, and gravel gardens. Combines beautifully with Rudbeckia, Pennisetum, Agastache, and Sanguisorba.
