Commonly known as Golden Hakone Grass, this elegant clump-forming perennial is grown for its spectacular cascading foliage. The narrow, arching blades are bright yellow with fine green stripes — luminous in a shady border — and take on warm amber and red tints as autumn arrives. Even in winter, the bleached, straw-coloured stems hold their quiet charm.
It thrives in cool, moist, humus-rich soil in dappled or partial shade. It will tolerate morning sun but prefers to be sheltered from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage and dull the golden colour.
Cut faded foliage down to the ground in late winter and divide clumps in spring every few years to keep them vigorous and well-shaped.
A winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, ‘Aureola’ is a versatile and refined plant. It looks superb in containers, at the front of a shady border, or woven through a woodland planting alongside hostas, ferns, astilbes, Epimedium and Pulmonaria.
