Actaea arizonica is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial from Arizona, found in coniferous forests in damp, shady areas at 5,300–7,000ft. The creamy white, bottlebrush-like flowers are particularly beloved of bumblebees. The light green leaves are deeply cut, spaced along tall, upright stems and also forming a crown at the base.

Flowering in July and August, and endangered in the wild, it needs sheltered, humid conditions and rich, fertile soil to thrive. A shady, sheltered site with yearly mulching would be ideal.

  • Care Guide:

Grow in cool, dappled shade in moist, reasonably fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Mulch to maintain soil moisture and condition. Cut back to around 5cm once the foliage dies back in autumn. Actaea is long-lived and can be left undisturbed — it does not need regular division. It dislikes hot, dry conditions.

  • Good to Know:

Wildlife-friendly — nectar-rich flowers attract bumblebees and other pollinators in autumn.

Long-lived and easy to grow once established.

    ⚠️ Humans: Harmful if eaten.
