Vernonia arkansana — Ironweed — is a tall, upright perennial with lance-shaped, serrated green leaves and clusters of vivid fluffy purple flowers in late summer and early autumn.
Magnificent at the back of a border in a sunny position, Vernonia is a common prairie perennial in North America and thrives in moist soils, particularly alongside watercourses — though it will also cope with drier conditions. An excellent late-season plant for pollinators.
