Vernonia arkansana

Vernonia is commonly known as Ironweed, this perennial has tall erect stems and green lance-shaped leaves with a serrated margin. Late summer provides us with a cluster of fluffy purple flowers.

Vernonia arkansana would look great at the back of your borders providing it is in a sunny location. A common perennial in North America, Ironwood thrives in moist soils especially alongside water courses. It will also cope with drier soils.
