Cirsium heterophyllum, the Melancholy Thistle, bears lilac-pink, thistle-like flowers from spring through summer above a clump of lance-shaped leaves that form a basal rosette; the stem leaves are more divided in character. Spineless and vigorously spreading, it is a generous plant that benefits from ample space.
It thrives in full sun or partial shade in moist soil, though it will tolerate drier conditions. Bees are particularly drawn to its flowers, making it well suited to wildlife gardens and naturalistic borders.
