The melancholy thistle bears lilac-pink, thistle-like flowers from spring through summer above a clump of lance-shaped leaves that form a basal rosette; the stem leaves are more divided in character. Spineless and vigorously spreading, it is a plant that needs plenty of space.
Grow in full sun or part shade in moist soil, though it will tolerate drier conditions. Bees are particularly drawn to it, making it an excellent choice for a wildlife garden or for attracting pollinators to the border.
