Ajuga reptans ‘Catlins Giant’ produces bold blue flower spikes in late spring, held upright above the glossy, metallic purple leaves that hug the ground. It is one of the largest-leaved forms of bugle, and the lustrous foliage remains handsome throughout the year.
This makes it an ideal plant to grow beneath shrubs or trees, or to combine with contrasting foliage such as Epimedium and Lamium maculatum in a winter planter. It spreads steadily but responds well to a quick trim if it outgrows its space. It prefers humus-rich soil in a semi-shaded position.
