Astilbe 'Erica' (× _arendsii_)
Height x Spread: 36cm x 50cm
A. 'Erica' is a clump forming herbaceous perennial ideally suited to consistently moist but well drained soil of any pH. The fern like leaves of this cultivar emerge in spring with a red/bronze hue and mature to a deep glossy green. Its’ frothy flowers bloom pale pink in early summer and make excellent cut flowers. Faded stems can be cut back at the base if you don’t like the look of them but they can be left for late season interest. Loved by bees and particularly butterflies this would make a great addition to a wildlife garden.
Tolerant of both deer and rabbits, its’ only requirement is that it is never allowed to dry out, so it is better suited to areas that are in part or full shade. A rich organic mulch applied in spring will help keep it happy.
Divide every four or five years to maintain its vigour and ensure you always have the maximum amount of showy flower stems.
