Tall stems bear frothy pale pink plumes of flower in mid-summer, above a clump of fern-like foliage. The leaves emerge with a red-bronze hue in spring and mature to a deep, glossy green.
Ideally suited to consistently moist or boggy soil and dappled shade — with sufficient moisture, Astilbe ‘Erica’ will tolerate more sun. Plant alongside streams or ponds, or within a shady bog garden.
The pale pink blooms make excellent cut flowers, and Astilbes are loved by bees and butterflies, making them a fine addition to a wildlife garden. Faded stems can be left over winter to provide late-season interest and shelter for insects. Cut back to ground level in spring.
Divide every four or five years to maintain vigour and maximise the number of flower stems produced.
