Large rounded heads of silvery lilac-grey flowers stand tall over mid-green strap like foliage.

Best grown in full sun in a sheltered spot away from strong wind. It will be happy in any well-drained soil both in the ground or in pots. Contrary to popular belief, Agapanthus do not like to get too congested and should be lifted and split when dormant every 3-4 years.

Each stem flowers once, but the flowers open consecutively making them quite long lasting. The seed heads are attractive and can be left to provide winter interest. Flowering occurs between July and September depending on the weather. When grown in beds and borders it is hardy to -15C, but ensure that the soil does not become waterlogged over winter.

When grown in pots it is prudent to ensure that the drainage hole is not blocked as we move into autumn. Lift the pot to avoid it sitting in a puddle and move against a sheltered house wall or into a greenhouse or garage to avoid the roots getting too cold.

Agapanthus benefit from a mulch being applied in the autumn, around but not touching the plant.

If grown in a pot, a balanced liquid feed such as liquid seaweed can be watered into the soil once the first flower buds appear. Use only at the dilution indicated on the bottle.
