Ageratina altissima ‘Chocolate’ is a striking late-season perennial grown primarily for its rich, deep purple foliage, which holds its colour throughout summer and well into autumn before the plant comes into bloom. The flowers themselves are small and creamy white, carried in flat-topped clusters — a beautiful contrast against the dark leaves, and highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
Unfussy and reliable, ‘Chocolate’ thrives in sun or partial shade in most reasonable soils, including clay. A superb choice for the middle of a cottage garden or informal border, and particularly effective planted alongside ornamental grasses.
