Commonly known as African Mallow, 'El Rayo' is one of those wonderful near year-round performers, most floriferous through autumn and winter, producing masses of large, mid-pink single flowers with deep reddish-pink centres on airy, branching stems cloaked with slightly leathery mid-green leaves. The display lessens in spring and summer but never disappears entirely.
A great evergreen shrub for a small, sheltered garden or terrace where plants really have to prove their worth. Hailing from the South African Cape, it needs a sunny spot and free-draining soil to thrive, and can be semi-evergreen in colder winters. In spring, once the frosts have finished, prune by 50% to encourage further and longer flowering.
H3 — hardy in mild areas of the UK (-5°C to -10°C). Provide shelter or bring under cover in colder regions.
Height × Spread: 100cm × 100cm
Synonym: Anisodontea capensis 'El Rayo'.
