Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ is one of the finest foliage plants for a sunny border, forming a billowing mound of finely cut, intensely aromatic silver-grey leaves that shimmer in sunlight and provide a cool, luminous contrast to flowering neighbours. A sub-shrub with woody stems at the base, it is effectively evergreen in mild winters.
An invaluable foil for roses, salvias, dahlias and ornamental grasses, it is equally at home in gravel gardens and drought-tolerant schemes. Prune back hard to around 5cm in early spring to keep the plant compact and encourage fresh, silvery growth. Thrives in well-drained to dry soil in full sun — it dislikes heavy, wet conditions.
