Aster ageratoides 'Harry Smith' is one of those plants that deserves to be better known. From late summer into autumn it produces masses of small, soft pink single flowers, each with a golden centre, on dark, wiry, branching stems. The fact that it performs well in partial shade in free-draining soil — among other conditions — is the answer to many a gardener's prayer: late-season colour in dry shade. Hurrah!
Good for attracting pollinators, robust and resistant to mildew, it combines beautifully with the soft yellow flowers of Nepeta govaniana, the taller starry white blooms of Eurybia divaricata and the heart-shaped foliage of Epimedium.
