Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
A sturdy, clump-forming perennial, Aster thomsonii has grey-green foliage and flowers from August to October. Bright lavender-purple petals surround a central disc of yellow that darkens to red once pollinated; the flowers are large, up to 5cm across.
It performs best in free-draining or moisture-retentive, free-draining, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Attractive to bees and butterflies, it also makes an excellent cut flower and suits wildlife, coastal and informal garden settings.
