Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
A tall, stately Astilbe that comes into its own when the summer border begins to fade. 'Purpurlanze' sends up narrow, upright panicles of purplish-red flowers in late summer and early autumn, rising to 1.2–1.5m above clumps of divided, mid-green foliage — a bold vertical statement at the back of a moist border.
Grow in moist but well-drained or boggy soil in dappled shade or indirect sun. Drought intolerant; avoid hot, direct sun. Particularly well suited to waterside planting. As the flowers fade, rusty-brown seed heads provide attractive winter decoration — leave until early spring, then cut back. Divide every few years to maintain vigour.
