An early-flowering cultivar, ‘Deutschland’ produces open sprays of pure white flowers held over fern-like, glossy green foliage. For a spectacular show, plant in dappled shade in humus-rich soil that stays consistently moist — with enough moisture, Astilbe will also tolerate more sun.
‘Deutschland’ looks wonderful planted in large swathes alongside ponds, on the banks of streams or in bog gardens.
The white plumes make excellent cut flowers and are perfect for pollinators. Once faded, the seed heads can be left over winter to provide late-season interest and cover for wildlife. Cut back to ground level in spring.
Mulch annually to increase the soil’s humus content, and divide every four or five years to maintain vigour.
Pair with Astrantias, Hostas, Ferns and Thalictrums to create a peaceful, dreamlike space.
