An older garden variety, Astrantia major subsp. involucrata 'Moira Reid' has very large white and green flowers held on slender but strong stems that are taller than most. As a subspecies, both the flowers and foliage have a slightly different form to the species — broader bracts giving the flowers a more open, airy appearance.
A favourite with many of us at the nursery, it makes quite an impact in a border, flowering for weeks on end. Although it can take a little longer to form large clumps than some varieties, 'Moira Reid' is well worth the wait. It performs best in full sun in fertile, moisture-retentive soil.
