White-flowering Astrantia have a certain elegance and charm of their own, and 'Snow Star' is one of the best. From early to mid-summer it produces large white — sometimes blushed palest pink — masterwort flowers, each set off with a ruff of green-tipped bracts that rise above its lush green foliage.
Perfect for adding white highlights to the front or middle of a border, its foliage is often used to screen the bare legs of roses or the fading foliage of spring bulbs — an example of horticultural smoke and mirrors. To encourage a second flush in late summer or early autumn, cut back the first flush to just above ground level once the flowers have faded. It will flower in partial shade or sun but needs a good, moist, free-draining soil to thrive.
