Ever so delicate and graceful, Baptisia alba — White Wild Indigo — carries full spikes of pure white, pea-like flowers in summer that resemble a flutter of butterflies hovering over fresh blue-green foliage. As the flowers fade, large, black seed pods develop and persist on the bare winter stems, extending the season of interest and offering food for birds.
Easy to grow in a sunny, free-draining soil, it becomes drought tolerant once established. Attractive in its own right, it is a natural choice for a white garden and useful for adding delicate highlights to a perennial border, lifting surrounding colours and lightening the composition. It also lasts well as a cut flower.
