Baptisia australis is the classic False Indigo — also known as False Lupin — and one of the most rewarding of all prairie perennials. In early summer, erect spikes of intense indigo-blue, lupin-like flowers rise above clumps of attractive blue-green, clover-like foliage. Unlike a true lupin, however, it thrives in far drier conditions, and the inflated seed pods that follow turn black as they ripen, adding a further season of interest.
Best in full sun in well-drained soil, it develops deep roots over time and becomes increasingly drought tolerant once established. A long-lived, low-maintenance perennial, it is equally at home on a sunny bank, in a mixed border, or in a naturalistic prairie planting scheme.
