Baptisia ‘Dark Chocolate’ (Decadence Series) produces exceptionally long spikes of near-black, chocolate-purple flowers — each with a distinctive flash of yellow — that rise well clear of the foliage from late spring to early summer. The delicate, clover-shaped leaves on branching stems give away its pea family membership, adding interest from spring right through to autumn, while the seed pods that follow blacken and persist through winter.
Forming a full, bushy clump with real structural presence, it makes an excellent substitute for a shrub in a mixed border. It thrives in fairly fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny site and becomes drought tolerant once established — equally at home in formal city and courtyard gardens as in relaxed cottage and prairie-style planting.
