Baptisia ‘Dutch Chocolate’ (Decadence Series) produces upright spikes of rich chocolate-purple flowers with a flash of yellow from late spring to early summer, followed by attractive seed pods that blacken through autumn and winter. The delicate, clover-shaped foliage on branching stems — a tell-tale sign of its pea family membership — adds interest from spring right through to the first frosts.
Bred to be more compact than other Baptisia forms, it has wide appeal: equally at home in formal city and courtyard gardens as in relaxed cottage and prairie planting schemes. It prefers a fairly fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny site and, once established, becomes drought tolerant.
